Prosthodontists are specialist dental practitioners, specialising in the restoration of teeth and the replacement of missing teeth. Prosthodontists utilise mainly porcelain and acrylic in the form of crowns, bridges, inlays, implant prostheses, veneers, dentures to facilitate a cosmetic smile and retain function to the dentition.
Prosthodontists are usually involved in the reconstruction of large parts of the dentition, also rehabilitating the entire masticatory system including the TMJ’S. General dental practitioners will refer a patient to a prosthodontist should they feel the patient needs specialist attention. They work closely with the referring dentist, as well as other dental specialists e.g.: Orthodontists, maxillo-facial surgeons, periodontists to achieve an overall aesthetic and functional result.
Often these specialists can be equated to “the captain of the ship” co-ordinating complicated treatment plans.
An additional period of study (3-4 years) resulting in a masters degree in prosthodontics is required to be registered as a prosthodontist.
Maxillo-facial prosthodontics is that part of prosthodontics related to the replacement of missing parts of the face e.g. eye, ears, noses, cheeks etc.
